USGS WEB MODERNIZATION

Mobomo teamed with USGS in their web re-engineering initiative – building, maintaining, and supporting an agency-wide Drupal platform-as-a-service (PaaS) environment that serves as the primary public facing USGS.gov website, as well as hosting 300+ micro-sites for USGS science centers, laboratories, and other programs. Our team deployed Drupal as a platform CMS in the Amazon Web Service (AWS) cloud, modernizing its web infrastructure to allow for the rapid support of varied scientific activities, and the ability to quickly deploy innovative experiences.

USGS Technical Architecture and Infrastructure Scripts and Drupal Palladium Platform

WHAT WE DID.

Technical Architecture and Infrastructure Scripts: Mobomo redeveloped the Drupal USGS.gov Palladium platform in the Cloud Hosting Services (CHS) Amazon cloud environment. Palladium is the flagship site for USGS.gov which will eventually ingest over 300+ USGS subsites. The Drupal Platform was configured to embrace the Create Once, Publish Everywhere (COPE) philosophy, allowing content managers to create content once and disseminate that content throughout the entire USGS.gov website. This is accomplished through taxonomies that link content together that would otherwise be siloed across all of the subsites.

Drupal Palladium Platform: Our team ensured the USGS.gov Palladium platform cloud architecture delivered high availability, security, and performance. In addition to the design, our team developed scripts to automate the deployment of the AWS cloud architecture for the Drupal platform in development, test, and production.

Custom Module Development: We developed custom Drupal modules that comply with the USGS Drupal Development Framework standards. These modules are architected so they can be deployed across multiple websites for maximum reuse. For example, a common Water Module was developed in order to streamline information across multiple sites. Previously the water data had been presented with no consistency and without taking the user experience into consideration. The Water Module we deployed increased product identity/ branding consistency, decreased redundancies, eliminated overlap in software development and maintenance, and maximized data presentation and quality.

USGS Content Manager Training

Content Manager Training: The Mobomo team developed initial content manager training materials and conducted a training class for nearly 40 stakeholders across all USGS regions. The team was also responsible for providing training for three science center pilot sites and assisting with the creation of content for each of these sites.

Answers.usgs.gov: Our team designed, developed, and deployed a new answers.usgs.gov on the Drupal platform which replaced a legacy system that ran with multiple disparate email boxes. The new answers.usgs.gov system is a custom developed ticket support Drupal module that provides USGS site visitors the ability to request information from USGS through a webform and/or real-time chat and USGS staff members the ability to respond to those inquiries. The system also captures critical metrics such as number of tickets per topic, active vs. open tickets, and includes a ticket search functionality. In addition, the customer-friendly site integrates with the USGS FAQ systems for rapid access to self-service information. These requests, along with customer support calls that are recorded and routed to the appropriate customer service representatives, provide USGS with comprehensive tracking and ensure timely responses.

Publications and Profiles: Mobomo migrated the Publications Warehouse (Pubs) database and the USGS Professional Pages (Profiles) database into the Drupal Palladium platform. Once in the Palladium platform, the Profiles will be entirely managed within Palladium and feature the same COPE philosophy as with the rest of the site. Although Pubs does not reside within Palladium, content managers are able to create new records linked to archived databases and external sites.
